Payday Super is coming – what you need to know

Payday Super is a major change to Australia’s super system, aimed to help boost retirement savings over time

Do you know how often your super gets paid? Even if you don’t regularly check your balance there are rules around when your employer needs to pay you super, it’s called the Superannuation Guarantee (SG). Currently, employers only need to make SG contributions quarterly, but this will change from 1 July 2026.

A new law known as Payday Super means employers will be required to pay super contributions at the same time they pay salaries and wages. While contributions will follow your pay cycle, they may not appear in your super account on the same day as your pay, as processing times can differ.

Good news for workers
Being paid super contributions more frequently means payments arrive in your account sooner, giving it more time to be invested, compound and grow over the long term. Over time, this can make a meaningful difference to your retirement savings.
More regular payments can also help reduce the risk of unpaid or underpaid super payments.

Track your super
Make sure you have access to your online super account and app, so you can regularly check your payments and account balance.
Many super funds also provide tools and calculators to help you estimate how much you may retire with and understand the impact different payments amounts could have over time.
