WOMEN IN TRADE UNIONS
(Women in Trade Unions Network)
Artists: Kay Lawrence, Elaine Gardner
Funded by: All Our Working Lives Project, UTLC and individual unions
Produced: 1984-87
As well as being designed and made collaboratively, the banner itself demonstrates that the crafts can be as effective as the fine arts in communicating ideas. And that embroidery, a medium often devalued because of its association with women and domesticity, is particularly appropriate in this context. Kay Lawrence
The first parade of the banner was a very emotional experience. The women were glowing with pride, almost ‘crowing’ with delight at being part of the process. Lots were pointing at where they had stitched. Their joy was wonderful. Kay and I felt fantastic. I don’t think I have felt so good about a project as a whole, and a piece of work in particular.
